Shredded bark or hardwood is usually employed to cover the ground between plants, help suppress weeds, and conserve water. This tidiness comes at a cost, however, and can also be harmful in our gardens. Skip the back-breaking work and use plants instead! Low growing native plants can serve the same purpose as mulch, and are more beautiful, and ecologically valuable. Orsi Lazar, owner of Learn Do Thrive, a local gardening company, will show us why and how to make the change. A selection of tough, versatile native plants that will fulfill this role in a variety of growing conditions will also be discussed.
