Pennsylvania Horticultural Society: History of the Philadelphia Flower Show

PLEASE NOTE 7:00 PM MEETING START TIME.

Since its first public exhibition in 1829, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has introduced beautiful new plants, inspiring design concepts, and innovative environmental practices to the American public at its annual show. This illustrated lecture includes rare images, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and fascinating background information drawn from the PHS McLean Library Archives.

We will also have an opportunity to get an update on the 2021 Philadelphia Flower Show, which will take place at Philadelphia’s Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park on June 5 - 13 with the aptly titled Show theme, “HABITAT, Nature’s Masterpiece.” This will be the first time in the Show’s history that it will take place outside at the height of local gardening season. FDR Park, opened in 1921, is a magnificent landscape designated a Historic District by the Philadelphia Historical Commission. The Park was designed by Olmsted Brothers, an internationally celebrated firm who transformed park design and use in the early 20th century.
